In loving memory of Ajay Khindria, One Kind Act are honoured to launch ‘Ajay Khindria’s MAMA & ME’ Initiative. This is aimed at empowering mothers of impoverished communities in India and caring for them and their babies/young children through sustainable and impactful interventions at Anganwadi Centres. This initiative has been inspired by Ajay’s dedication to making a world a better place, where mother and child do not suffer. It is in collaboration with YUVA Unstoppable. ANGANWADI CENTRES (AWC)AWCs are Preschool Centres in India for children aged under 6 and are described as the World's Largest Outreach Program, providing Nutritional Support, Early Childhood Care & Development to Children, Pregnant and Lactating Mothers, & Adolescent Girls. At such AWCs: The carer workforce is known as ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and are trained to teach, give nutrition and health advise to both to the children and pregnant mothers. They primarily are all women, serving as a consistent bridge between government schemes in the community. Their training and salary are paid by the government.1 meal a day is given to all children, also paid by the government. 3 ELEMENTS TO 'Ajay Khindria's MAMA & ME' Initiative: There are 3 separate elements to this Initiative (see below for full details):NUTRITION KIT FOR 10 MONTHS: To support the pregnant mothers and children with nutrition and health guidance for 10 months during their pregnancyAWC/PRESCHOOL CENTRE RENOVATION: To transform existing AWCs/Preschool Centres to requisite standard/criteria (see below)AWC/PRE SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION: To build a brand new or demolish/rebuild a new AWC/Preschool Centre to requisite standard/criteria (see below)AWC/Preschool Centre Criteria:Each Centre will have A hall, kitchen and storeroom Sustainable infrastructure for clean water, sanitation and hygieneAccess to clean drinking waterFully reliable electricityOne ASHA (see above) worker and helperRegular health check-ups and nutrition counselling sessions for mothers A Smart TV and educational and learning equipment for the childrenBenefits'Ajay Khindria’s MAMA & ME' Initiative at these AWC/Preschools aims to derive the following benefits: Health: Regular health check-ups and nutrition counselling sessions would lead to better health outcomes for children and mothersAttendance: Improved health and better infrastructure leads to an improvement in attendance in the CentresWomen Empowerment: Providing education, training, and employment opportunities for women, who predominantly serve as ASHA workersNUTRITION KIT FOR 10 MONTHSDONATION AMOUNT - £150There is a maternal malnutrition crisis in India whereby over 18% of pregnant women are underweight and more than 52% are anaemic. Malnutrition contributes to low birth weight, preterm delivery, and long-term developmental challenges for the child. The objective here is to identify undernourished pregnant women all over India and distribute each with a Nutrition Kit over their 10 months of pregnancy to support maternal health. The Nutrition Kit provides essential nutrients and education to pregnant women, as follows:Iron, calcium, folic acid, and protein-rich foods enough for the familyCommunity health check-ups and group consultations with doctors.Prenatal wellness sessions and awareness programs empowering mothers with knowledge on diet and pregnancy care.AWC/PRESCHOOL CENTRE RENOVATIONDONATION AMOUNT - £5,000This aims to RENOVATE an existing AWC/Preschool Centre that is in need of improvement/ upgrade, in the following way:• Infrastructure: Improvements include waterproofing, flooring, and solar panel installation. • WASH initiatives: Building of clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. • Children: From 6 months onward, children receive age-appropriate nutrition and regular health monitoringAt age 3, children join the pre-school program at the AWC/Preschool Centre for early educational stimulation through digital learning tools and educational toys and develop social skills and routine in a safe, caring environmentBy age 6, children are school-ready with a strong learning foundation There are typically 40-50 children at an AWC/Preschool centre. AWC/PRESCHOOL CENTRE CONSTRUCTIONDONATION AMOUNT - £15,000This aims to1. DEMOLISH an existing AWC/Preschool Centre that is deemed to be unfit for purpose and RECONSTRUCT or2. Beside his devotion to his family and friends, his dedication to One Kind Act showed no bounds. As Vice Chair and Finance Trustee, he was an integral part of the charity and went beyond the call of duty to fulfil his role to the utmost.A much-loved man…..we will all miss him to the core. Welcome to our June 2023 NewsletterDear One Kind Act Supporters,We hope this newsletter finds you healthy and happy. It has been an exciting year so far at One Kind Act, and we are thrilled to share some updates with you.The past 6 months:Our Dare to Dream Gala Ball in March 2023 was a resounding success; raising over £300k for building not just one but two brand new state-of-the-art schools with clean toilets, smart classrooms, and clean running water for some of the most deprived, despairing young lives in India. To realise this dream, One Kind Act will work with our Charity Partner, Yuva Unstoppable who aim to transform the lives of underprivileged children by improving their learning opportunities. We invite all One Kind Act supporters to be as involved as you would like in the new schools by volunteering, visiting or supporting the children. In January 2023, supporters undertook an arduous 5-day cycle ride from Mumbai to Goa Cyclists rode up to 9 hours a day under the blazing sun and difficult terrain, raising funds for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families around the world. Our Ladies Night in April 2023 was a sold-out success, raising money to help the homeless here in the UK and feeding families who are often going hungry as they struggle with the cost of living. The evening was filled with music, live singing, dancing, shopping at several stalls, with generous raffle prizes.Upcoming events:We are excited to announce our forthcoming events.On 18 July 2023 our sponsor partners Prideview Group will host their annual competitive cricket tournament where exceptional talent will compete for the famous Prideview trophy, as well as there being an Ex-Cricket Pros Exhibition match.This is a family day out with food, drinks, play areas and much more to keep all ages entertained as the cricket matches are played.Tickets are on sale to come and spectate. This year, One Kind Act has been recognised as a charity of integrity and effectiveness by the Asian Achievers Award, and as such, we have been selected as their 2023 charity partner. Money raised at their glittering event in September recognising outstanding contributions of the Asian diaspora in UK will go to good causes through us. Welcome to our October 2021 NewsletterThe last year has been an extraordinary one for the world with so many people desperately needing our help. And we have stepped up. In doing so we have crossed the £1 million milestone of money deployed to the deprived, changing thousands of lives around the globe.There have been several appeals and fundraisers as we kept up with the need of the hour during a tumultuous year.Aleem, a generous, warm, wonderful affiliate of OKA, husband of associate Reeta, tragically succumbed to Covid too young. An appeal in his memory raised almost £30,000 to educate children in India – a testament to how much he was loved and respected. His spirit lives on though dozens of children given hope and opportunity where they had none. We miss him.Young couple, Karun and Aditi ran a staggering 100km to raise money to tackle food poverty in UK at a time when so many were struggling to put food on their families’ table.OKA associate Reeta bravely ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon with Arti Andrade, Rupal Patel, Rajan, Raj, Satta, Taz, Poonam Sethi and Elliot Lyons, whose impressive joint fundraising went towards an incentives-driven project in India to vaccinate rural communities who face vaccine hesitancy.Additional appeals were made to feed the poor through London Community Kitchen, to send help to India during their terrible Covid wave and to support Afghan refugees.Alisha Malhotra set up the Bright Start Scholarship Programme, which has surpassed all expectations. So far 59 intelligent, hard- working students from poor backgrounds in India have been identified and will be educated from age 15 through college until they get a job. These are children of rickshaw drivers, daily wage labourers, street cleaners – those on the lowest rung of income and society who cannot afford school fees. For just £1500, a child is lifted out of the circle of lack of education and poverty and given the opportunity to pull up their families and their communities. The impact of this programme simply cannot be underestimated.Fun Times 🎉The annual OKA garden party returned with a bang after a Covid break. Tickets sold out almost immediately. Post lockdown euphoria was infectious and in abundance. Guests could not get enough of dancing, mingling, drinking and eating on the sprawling lawns under a summer sky until darkness set in. The generosity surpassed previous years with almost £65,000 raised.We are proud of our figures 💰Almost £415,000 was given out this year to wide and varied Causes.We’ve helped…Build and transform run-down schools in India and Africa by providing:Upgraded toilet facilitiesSmart technology in classroomsClean drinking water through rainwater harvestingProvide dialysis treatment to the poor in IndiaContinue support running costs at the Rehab centre for underprivileged victims of brain injury In IndiaRoll-out vaccinations in rural IndiaProcure Cooking Stations for use by children and adults as part of a school Good Nutrition Educational ProgrammeFurnish a garden for vulnerable teens in SloughEducate and nourish the young here in the UK and in rural IndiaSupport and fed the village elderly in IndiaFeed those struggling through the pandemic in UKOur due diligence remains rigorous and meticulous so that every £ brings maximum impact possible. As such we have been able to support so many projects, communities and individuals with your donations.New Liaisons 😀As our work expands, we looked to deepen associations with 2 new charity partners to ensure greater efficiency on certain projects.We raised money for the Covid crisis in India and with The British Asian Trust bought and delivered much-needed Oxygen concentrators as well as supported families of those who had lost their main breadwinner.Yuva International, an incredible charity recognised by the government of India for its effective, practical solutions to poverty are working with us on many fronts including the Bright Start Scholarship Programme, transforming government schools and making vaccines more accessible in rural areas.New Sponsor Partners 🤝On the fundraising front, we have been in a mutual courtship with very different but dynamic companies, which resulted in them becoming our sponsor partners. They were impressed with our integrity, effectiveness and impact. We loved their intention to improve the world, their generosity and their values.The Prideview Group, a successful, fast-growing property investment consultancy has raised over £100,000 to date for us which has made a worthy impact in the realms of UK food poverty and in education and life-saving medical support to poor children abroad. We look forward to a partnership that grows every year.Calcot Services for Children, an initiative providing care and education to vulnerable youngsters have been recognised and awarded by Ofsted, families and external agencies for their powerful impact on the young. They have raised money for various projects of ours that provide Covid support and improved education and nutrition to children that span Sri Lanka, India, Africa and UK. We are deeply grateful to have them as our partners.Pyramid Pharmacy, a successful, family-run group of retail pharmacies owned by the Bhogal family were our earliest sponsors and have formally gone into a partnership with us. As a family, they host our annual flagship event, the OKA Garden Party, which has facilitated fundraising of just under £130,000 to date for One Kind Act. This has enabled building houses in Sierra Leone, feeding the homeless in the UK to sheltering, educating and providing hygiene and clean drinking water to poor children in India and Africa. Reflecting on 2020 2020 proved to be a year never to be forgotten! It was a year of pain, of hardship and of untold grief for so many. For others, it was a time for reflection and introspection, time to reset certain life patterns and most importantly of all, a time which displayed humanity at its best, that of the selfless show of kindness we felt for one another. It is this very sense of community kindness that has made 2020 one to remember for One Kind Act. The resounding success of our Child of Mine Ball in Dec 2019, the continuing generous support of our followers through donations and fundraising efforts (especially that of the youngsters) and that of our loyal Sponsors and the invaluable bonding of new charity partnerships has meant that One Kind Act have achieved more than we could have hoped for in such a difficult year. It has meant that the TOTAL FUNDS RAISED IN 2020 WAS JUST UNDER £145K. You will see we have been able to continue to reach out to worthy Causes in India & Africa, comprising £150K of our grants. The remaining £100K of grants has been in our response to the COVID crisis here in the UK. Never before have we witnessed the courage and selflessness that some local charities such as LCK, OFFL & SWAT have shown in tackling food poverty amongst the poor, vulnerable and the homeless. We SALUTE all such charities for the dedication they have shown in 2020. A Bright Start to 2021 We have hope for 2021. And this first ray of hope has been inspired by no other than Alisha Malhotra, our Chairman’s daughter. Five years ago, after suffering a stroke, Alisha had to put her teaching career on hold. The work she did empowered children to stand on their own two feet. Five years on, she’s returning to education. In partnership with One Kind Act and Yuva Unstoppable, by launching Bright Start - An Educational Scholarship Programme to help some of the brightest but most marginalised children in India.
